Check in hand

Insurance paid a nice fat check but upon further inspection, they failed to include my broken slide-out awning.
I will have a mobile rv tech do the repairs on sight. I will have all three (2 slide-outs and porch) awnings replaced as 10 years is past their life expectancy.

DAMN!!

Sunday afternoon a tree came crashing thru our bedroom ceiling.
No one was hurt but it is not looking good for our beloved Cardinal.

My Dream Pickup Truck

If money were no object and I could spend any amount on a pickup.
A new Super Duty Expended Cab Diesel... NOPE
     A new Ram Diesel... NADA
     A new Chevrolet.... HELL NO
How about a new Toyota..... DON'T EVEN GO THERE

If money were no object I would BUY an honest truck.

A fully restored "Plain Jane" (bright grill and no other chrome) 1974 Ford F250 4x4, straight 300 I6, granny 4 speed, vinyl seat, rubber floor mat, power steering, power brakes, and a/c. Factory original including single stage paint (no clear coat crap). Heavy duty rear bumper (with dealers name and city stamped in it). Crank up windows and for all I care you can leave out the radio.

I got Fired?

Yes, I got fired from my side gig. I made my client 32% for the year ( not a misprint, 32% ). This is actual cash in the account profit, not paper profits. I can understand ( not really but everyone has to do what they feel is best ) because I was managing an IRA and he was leaving the profits in the account and just paying me out of his pocket. My 3.2% (10% of the 32% profit) seemed excessive to him, but if I made him nothing I got NOTHING.

He was a "buy and hold" investor for decades (with the steady albeit small gains) but has followed my tutelage and not thinks he is smarter than the teacher.

Well it was a nice run while it lasted but at least I will have more time because I can no long dedicate 3+ hours a day on the phone with him.

Solar made easy

How much solar do I need?
Really that answer is easy but first you have to know how any batteries do I need. Wait, I thought we were talking about solar. A solar panel is just a battery charger that uses the sun instead of normal electricity to charge your battery. When the sun goes down no charge takes place.

Normal deep cycle lead-acid batteries (the type everyone is familiar with) should not be drained more than 50% of their capacity to keep them healthy for maximum life. Less drain would be even better but we will use 50% because that is the known standard.

Your batteries are like the gas tank in your car. If your car has a 10gallon gas tank and it gets 30 miles per gallon, you can drive 300 miles before you will run out of gas. You add gas before that happens and you drive as long as you keep adding gas. Just make sure you keep enough gas for the miles you need to drive.

Your batteries are the same, you need enough power to last until you can add more. If you are using solar to charge your batteries, that means until the sun hits your solar panels again or sundown to sunrise. If your batteries are full at sundown you can use 50% of them by sunrise.

Your batteries power capacity (gas in the tank) is measured in amp hours (ah). An amp hour means 1amp used for 1hour. If you have a 200AH battery, you can use 1amp for 100hours, or 10amp for 10hours, or 25ams for 4hours and so forth. Remember only 50% of your 200ah battery should be used, thus 100ah.

Are you ever going to tell me how much solar I need?
No, you are going to tell me!

12volt appliances will be measured in 12volt amps,( example car radio, 2.5amp@12volt ), regular household appliances are measured in 120volt amps, example home radio, 2.5amp@120volt. Since 12volt amps are used at 12volts, they are easily measured, a 2.5amp appliance used 2.5 12volt amps an hour of usage.

In order to use regular household 120volts from your 12volt batteries you need a 12volt-to-120volt inverter. Hook your inverter to 12volt battery and just lug in your 120volt appliance in and you have 120volts. Your inverter uses 10 12volt amps to make 1 120volt amp. So for every 1 120amp you are using 10amps from your battery. Now you see your home radio that uses 2.5amp @ 120volt will actually be using 25amps of 12volt battery power.

Every appliance 12volt or 120volt will have its rated usage marked on it somewhere. Lets say it is marked 2.5amp@120volt. That means it could use up to 2.5amps so that is what we use. Remember that 2.5amp is for an hour, use if for 30 minutes and you use 1.25amp and so on.

Wait cowboy, my appliance says 80watts@120volt. Some lower usage appliances are rated in watts. Watts, both 12volt and 120volt and be converted to amps by dividing the watts by the volts.
80watts@120volt: 80/120=6.66amps

Now we can start to figure how many amp hours we will use when no battery charging is taking place. We will call that sundown.

For example only, you must figure your own:

     1. rv 12volt lights 1.5amp@12volt                                                                      12volt amps
                                                                                     used 4 hours x 1.5amp  =      6.0   amps

     2. rv 12volt on demand water pump12amp@12volt
              ( 6 min is 1/10hour)                                        used 6 min x 12amp/10 =     1.2 amps

     3. laptop .5amp@120volt
              ( 120volts amps are x10 12volts amps )         use 2hours x 5amps =           10.0 amps

     4. cellphone charger  40watts@120volt
              (40watts/120=.33amps x10 for 120volt)         use 3hours x .33amps=           1.0 amps

     5. TV  2.5amp@120volt
               ( 120volt amps are x 10 12volt amps)            use 4 hour x 25amps=          100.0amps
                                                                                                 Total                        118.2 amp@12volt

For this example we round up to 120amps used from our batteries. Since we can only safely use 50% of battery capacity, we know we need a bare minimum of 240ah batteries. Are we really going to use 118.2 amps. No, and here why, the light and the water pump will probably use their rated amps because their use is constant when in use. The cellphone and laptop will cycle on and off. The tv is really in constant cycle mode as the screen changes. Plus I have never measures a 12volt appliance that pulled current to its stated rate.   But 118.2 must be used as it represents what might be used.

Now do your own totals for what you plan on using to determine your minimum battery capacity.

Finally the reason you are here.................................

Solar is the easy part.....at least a common consensus.
For every 1 amp hour of battery capacity you need 1 watt of solar power.   Our example was 240ah battery so we would need 240watts of solar power. That does not mean you can have less (you my not always fill your gas tank if money is short), this is just what is needed with adequate sunshine to have a full battery bank at sundown.

Batteries are limited by weight, space, and money in that order. Solar is limited by space, money, and weight in that order.

Add more batteries and you have more "reserve" for dark hours.(my choice)
Add more solar and you have more "power" to use during charging hours and still have your full at sundown.
Add more of both and you have the best of both worlds.

To elaborate on our gas tank analogy a bit more. If you know your gas funds are limited then you only drive necessary miles like to work. Low on battery power, no tv tonight!

I hope this simplifies things a little........thanks for stopping by.

2nd Quarter in the books

The 2nd quarter was better than the first and I have now made an actual profit of 18.54% for the half year. A very respectable return and the client is pleased.

Life goes on at our Hot Springs, Arkansas location and the next project will be a handicap ramp so Judy can get in and out. She is now using a walker 100% of the time.

Until next time, be safe, be happy.

Not spectacular results

My "side job" resulted in a 7.14% cash profit for my client for the first quarter of 2017. These are not "paper gains" but actual cash profits. Less than I had hoped for but he was very pleased and  that it all that is important.

He was hoping for 12% for the whole year or 4% a quarter. Past results do not predict future results but I have been pretty contestant for several years.

Is it really December?

December already and another year is almost in the books. We have been in Hot Springs, Arkansas for the entire year and then some.

Judy doesn't leave the trailer often but she is happy as long as she has her evil "Facebook".

As for me, I have picked up a "side job". I manage a 401k for a friend of mine. I get paid a percentage of the accumulated profits. That keeps me occupied.

On a more personal note, my son is now a Professor at UALR in Little Rock so he is only an hour away. The closest he has been is twenty years. Yea!

I really don't see any changes in our live until major health issues arise.

Local Government at its best

Biloxi has a new minor league baseball team and a baseball stadium needed to be built. Plans were drawn and bids were let. The city said they could BARELY afford the "have to have" stadium.

The team owners and league said if the stadium could not be completed by the "home opener", the city would be fined $10,000 per home game.

First problem, after starting the stadium it is learned that it does not have enough seats to meet the standard for new league rules. Cha-ching, $1,000,000+

Second problem, someone forgot to include a scoreboard. Cha-ching, $1,000,000.

Third problem, they fire the general contractor and try to be letting bids to all the sub-contractors. Cha-ching.

Now the stadium will not be completed on time and best case it will cost the city $250,000 for missing 25 home games.

Cha-ching, cha-ching.

Makes one wonder how many more city and county leaders will be charged with kick-backs.

Back Again

After spending the summer in Hot Springs, Arkansas, we are back in Gulfport, Mississippi for the winter.

The summer was exciting and my son received his PH.D from Penn State, very proud of him for achieving his goal.

We added a new Chevy Malibu to our stable (I know, me with a damn Chevrolet), maybe I am mellowing in my old age. We didn't want to buy a new truck, so the car is now our principal transportation and the truck is mostly used to pull our camper from point A to point B and double as a second vehicle when needed. Plus the new car should last us the rest of our driving lives.

I wish her the best

I first saw her about two weeks ago parking in a small parking lot connected to the local Wal-Mart. The lot appeared to have been built in hopes of a small business locating there but it never happened and now people living in vehicles use it without being hassled
.
Three days later she had not moved. It was a warm day and she had the sliding door of her mid 90's Dodge  (with Florida tags) mini van open and sitting just inside. She appeared to be in her 60's.

I bought a Jr. Whopper and fries and placed the change from a $5 bill in the sack and parked where she could see me approaching her. As I neared the van, she closed the door leaving about a 5 inch opening. I made eye contact when I stopped about six feet from the van. She had a scared look in her eyes and was lightly moving her head side to side. I said "please" and gently placed the bag on the van floor through the small opening as she moved out of my sight to the rear of the van. As I moved back and entered my truck I was seated high enough to she her opening a purse to put the money in it.

It turned colder for several nights with the temps in the mid 30's and I continued to worry about her. On our next Wal-Mart trip I bought her a few items that could be eaten with no preparation, maybe not the healthiest but food is food. Crackers, tuna in pouches, viennas, chicken in a pull top can (like tuna), a jar of peanut butter, banana and some snacks.

Her van had been moved but was parked in almost the same spot. It was still rather cool, so the door was closed. I stepped up to van and looked inside, she was not there. She had part of an old egg-crate mattress pad, blankets, emergency blanket (looks like thick aluminum foil), styrofoam coffee cups on the dash, and in general disarray of living in a van.

Two days later I again tried to delivery the supplies. The van was in the exact spot as before but when I approached the van I noticed nothing on the dash. When I looked inside, the van had been completely cleaned out, no trash or anything left.  I checked and the Florida tags had been removed.

I can only assume someone came and picked her up and pulled the tags. I just hope she is now warm of body, heart and mind.

Hell No

No this is unacceptable. Ice and snow on the Mississippi gulf coast. Last Friday we had  icey roads with hundreds of accidents and they are calling for more today and tonight with the possibility of snow mixed in. Teenagers here have never seen snow.

We are "snowbirds" but do not want to see snow. Maybe I will just sleep though it as great weather is forecasted for the weekend.

Maybe I will make lemonade from the lemons, seems I will have ice for it.

Lottery Ticket Job

What is a "Lottery Ticket Job" and where do you find one?

Lottery ticket jobs are EVERY WHERE and available to most EVERYONE. Don't laugh and say that is simply not so.

First off, a lottery ticket job is not one that pays enough to retire after a year or two. It is a job that usually pays a little more than the normal job in your area, with health insurance at a reasonable price, and maybe a 401k with some form of match (FREE MONEY). Should that job have a retirement plan, then you have really hit a lottery ticket job.

Go to work every day and contribute to the 401k and before you know it you can retire with enough income to replace your "take home pay" from work. For a working type man, it doesn't get any better than that.

With the job paying a little more than the norm in your area, you can pay health care, contribute to a 401k and still take home as much as your present job. Now that is a "lottery ticket job".

The job doesn't have a 401k, then open a Roth Ira (open one even if your job has a 401k). Your future will be taken care of. A Roth Ira is a terrific vehicle to save for retirement. "Goggle" it to learn more but a simple answer is:
All monies and any profits they earn can be withdrawn "tax free" at age 59 1/2. Any contribution that has been in the account (but not any profit on them) for five years or more can be withdrawn tax free.

You need to earn a living so why not get a "lottery ticket job" and earn your retirement at the same time.

Even small towns have these jobs, sometimes towns of 2500 or less but 10,000 or more and there will be multiple employers. Just remember you are looking for a "job" and not a position. Most national companies have these jobs and they are in your town.

Don't laugh they are there. Maybe not large manufacturing plants but did you consider a company owned Napa Auto Parts Store, Dollar Store, KFC, Kroger, or even a locally owned small plant or business.

Don't want to work until retirement then at leave any 401k monies in place and earning until you do retire. Work at a lottery ticket job for 5 years when you are young and you will have a much better retirement than you would have had.

"How much does it pay" is not the important question but "what benefits does it have". A quality company takes care of its employees and are hiring.

If you do not do well in live, don't blame anyone but yourself !

Nice place to spend the winter

We are just off I-10 in Gulfport, Mississippi at Campgrounds of the South for the winter. Three miles to the beach and casinos from four to fifteen miles away. Nice quit campground and we are away from the section used for the overnighters.

Wal-Mart, K-mart, movie theater, fast food and casual dining within blocks and far enough off the interstate for it not to be a problem.

We will not have shorts and tee shirt weather all winter but nice mild temps overall. As we are not campers on vacation but fulltimers living in a rv year round, it suits us fine.

All this and only a days drive of about 400 miles if we should have to return to central Arkansas.

Heading south

We have been in Tunica, Mississippi for about three weeks on our way to the gulf coast for the winter. It has been a great summer but it is time to run for more moderate winter weather.

Had to replace our camper tires as all were starting to separate. I hope that it was just a bad set as they only had 12,000 miles with lots of tread left on them.

Our camper came with a hid-a-bed couch that was not very comfortable to sit on. Finally replaced it with a double recliner love seat. It is electrically operated and VERY comfortable.

Can't believe we put up with that other couch for so long. I am not much of a recliner man but I do enjoy raising the ottoman part under my legs. Did I mention how comfortable it is?

We are headed to Gulfport, Ms. for a month and if we like it we will spend the winter. If not we will head where we do like it.

It's a tough life but we suffer though it.

Hot Springs, Ar.

Well summer time finds us in Hot Springs, Arkansas for a month, after a three month stay at Steve and Beverly's place in Fordyce. Always a great time visiting them.

While at Steve and Beverly's we welcome a new grand niece into the fold. She defiantly is a cutie pie.

Hot Springs has Oaklawn Race Track and Casino and the casino is closing their Texas Hold'em poker room today. I have played everyday and today will determine my total profit or loss.

Hot Springs is rather small but offers all the amenities we seek. We are staying at Mill Pond RV Park about 4 miles out of town. The park was once owned by Larry Snyder, a jockey for many years and a Oaklawn Park favorite. Older park with smaller rv sites but it is too hot to sit outside anyway.

We are really enjoying our slower pace of moving around. A month long stay seems to fit our old bodies.

Okatoma Resort & RV Park

We have moved to Hattiesburg, Mississippi as we make our way back to Arkansas. Okatoma RV Park is a nice park with about 75 rv lots and a dozen or so rustic looking cabins and park model cabins.

There are several "catch and release" small lakes on the grounds with the smaller one surrounded by the rv lots and cabins. A nice swimming pool is also on the grounds.

It is a Passport America park and we are allowed 4 nights with FHU's for $13 a night.

This is the "foot bridge" across the lake to the the showers and bathhouse. We needed neither so we chose this side of the lake.

This was taken from the foot bridge looking back into the park.

Of coarse ducks go along with the lake.

These are some of the rustic cabins

and some of the park models.

This is taken out our front door. All in all a rather nice campground.

Oatmeal-Raisin Cookies

Judy made oatmeal-raisin cookies to take to our twice monthly pot-luck dinner here at Azalea Acres Campground. Several people bragged on them and one lady wanted the recipe. Turns out that couple is also from Arkansas.

Tonight was Soups, Breads, and Desserts. A lot of Yankees and Canadians here in the campground and the "soups" were a little different to say the least. It's more about the the fellowship any way.

Beautiful Weather

Time for a little maintenance before we hit the road again. I did the monthly check on our  "batteries"
and battery box  and then I changed the oil in our Yamaha generator.

The generator is on the rear bumper and access is through this hole in the box and of course the oil drains out the bottom.

Just remove this blue panel and the oil plug and oil fill is in easy reach. Dang Sam, you need to wipe that generator, it looks filthy.

Everything is now ship shape for a little boondocking is we choose to.

Promised Land

Saturday was movie night ( actually we saw a noon matinee as I don't like to drive after dark) and we saw Promised Land a movie about "fracking" natural gas wells in Pennsylvania's Marcellus Shale region.

I am a fan of Matt Damon and have first hand knowledge of "fracking" having lived in Arkansas and its Fayetteville Shale boom.

The movie trailers depict a more exciting show than it really was. An enjoyable movie that was on the dull side.
